Oh, Please...

I work in a grocery store that's part of a large chain and they have a peculiar habit there. Whenever someone gets a phone call, whoever answers it will say over the intercom, "You have a phone call please on line one."

Yes, you read that right. You have a phone call please on line one.

Now where does this "please" come in? Please is a word to make requests sound more polite or to make demands seem, um, less demanding. It has never, as far as I know, been a means of sugarcoating information, until now.

I, for one, can't wait until this new trend in language butchery infiltrates other areas of life:

"And now for the weather. There will be scattered showers, please, for the rest of the week."
